Our last monthly activity was a tour of the Ipswich Heritage buildings. After another epic morning tea in a local Ipswich park, we picked up our guide from the Queens Park Information Centre. We started our tour winding our way through some tight little streets with houses built back in the 1800’s – the streets were built to cater for horses and carts back then.
Our guide, Vanida, gave a history of the many houses we travelled past, with original builders’ names, owners and what the building was used for back in the day. Vanida told us that there are some 7,000-plus heritage listed sites in the Ipswich city area alone –far too many for us to view in one day!
These buildings were built during a time when Ipswich was booming with coal, railways and wool industries leading the way. It is fabulous that there are so many of the heritage buildings being maintained in such wonderful condition – all thanks to the present owners.
Lunch at the Four Hearts Brewery followed our tour, with some lovely meals, and local brewed beverages to finish off a great day. Thank you to everyone who helped with our morning tea, and thanks to Darren, our driver on the day.
The Clubs ‘Extra Activity’ on the 2nd Wednesday of the month was a lunch at The Burrito Bar, in the Forest Lake Shopping Centre, supporting our local businesses.
The Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meets on the third Friday of the month at The Old Inala Hall, Cr Rosemary Street and Abelia Street, Inala at 10:30am. The club’s next meeting will be on Friday July 21, followed by Friday August 18.
