Forest Lake State High School (FLHS) ’s girls netball teams competed in the Yagera Netball Competition late last month, with the Opens team winning first place.
Seven teams were sent to the competition gala day, including the year seven, eight, nine, ten, and open girls teams as well as a year ten and an open boys team.
There they competed against schools from across the Yagera district, including Springfield Central SS, Glenala SS, Ripley Valley SS and Bellbird Park SS.
FLSHS Netball coach Ashley Bloomfield said all the school’s teams did really well.
“Every team made it into semi finals, except the year sevens… only the year 9, 10 and open girls made it into finals, with the Open girls coming out as the overall champions,” Ashley said.
“My girls went into the final game undefeated. The only close call we had was with Springfield Central, who we drew with in pool rounds.
“They were who we were up against in the final, and the girls were nervous, but knew if we stuck to what we had been doing and what we had practised in class, we would win.
Ashley said the Opens team was winning at halftime by about 5 goals.
“The girls let them come back in the last half, but managed to keep them at bay and took the win by one goal.
“The girls were extremely happy, and myself and fellow coach Mrs Wilson were elated with how well they worked together and played as a team,” Ashley said.
The team will compete again in the next stage after Yagera – Metros – where a variety of schools that won their own district gala days will compete.
