Christmas is fast approaching, and there are many ways to help save the planet this holiday season while also saving money. See our list of suggestions below to have a more mindful and sustainable Christmas!
Shop locally
Opting to buy from small independent businesses is a great way to bless your neighbours this Christmas, while also helping to boost the local economy. If you want to help your transactions make a bigger difference, look for markets and other opportunities to purchase gifts, food and supplies from local businesses this December rather than from large chains and superstores.
Make your own gifts
If you have time to learn a new skill, why not consider making your own gifts for the ones you love? Handmade gift ideas may include clothing, jewellery, toys, wood crafting, candles, resin art, photographs, paintings, and even baked goods – just find a recipe online.
Give the gift of food or other consumables
Stuck on finding the perfect gift for that person who already has everything, or wanting to give something practical to somebody doing it tough? A “consumable” gift filled with essentials such as clothing, pantry items, skincare products or bathroom products can go a long way.
Reduce wrapping paper waste
Using a wrapping paper alternative can prevent waste and save money, and can often be reused or repurposed as an added bonus! There are nearly endless alternatives to wrapping paper, including:
- Fabric, scarves, or tea towels tied up with natural string or recycled ribbons. (If purchased new, can be part of the gift).
- Newspapers, old maps, or scrap paper (if you have little ones, have them draw their own Christmas designs on these).
- Glass jars, cans, or baskets.
- Cardboard boxes (save packaging throughout the year with the option to paint them in block colours later.)
- Gift bags – save any received from previous years and re-use.
Use environmentally-friendly decorations
To reduce the use of plastic, purchase Christmas decorations and table settings made from natural materials such as wood, paper, cotton, linen, plants, twigs and flowers. Not only does it reduce waste, but it also looks great! If you don’t already own a Christmas tree, consider buying a potted one instead of a plastic one that will one day end up in landfill.
Buy pre-loved gifts
Pre-owned gifts are a great sustainable option. Look for good-quality items that work correctly, and remember that a coat of paint can go a long way. Great gifts can be found at garage sales, op shops and Facebook Marketplace.
Gift an experience
Gifting an experience can leave less of an impact on the environment while also shouting someone a fun opportunity! Giftable experiences could include spa day, a surf lesson, horse riding, escape room, mini-golf, bungee jumping, wine tours, paint and sip, dinner and a movie, a night at the theatre – the options are endless.
