Two of our members recently took an overseas trip to Asia. It was not the first time that Helen and Stephen had been to Vietnam and Cambodia but it was great to return and see the changes that have taken place. Their journey took them from Hanoi and HaLong Bay to Hue, Danang, Hoi An, and places in between.

Hanoi was an eye opener, with lots of traffic (well, scooters and motorbikes) and cars intermingling with the braver pedestrians. The traffic chaos was something to behold, but not unusual for that part of the world.

There was certainly lots to see and do. Shopping was a challenge as there were so many options and the food was amazing with all the different flavours. The occasional bout of “upset stomachs” was just part and parcel of the “excitement”.

Revisiting Siem Reap and Ankor Wat in Cambodia saw many changes. There is a lot of Chinese money being invested there and building is happening throughout the major cities. The one disappointment was the amount of uncontrolled litter, particularly plastic bags, which is a problem for the local population.

The trip then ended in Saigon and once again the millions of scooters and traffic chaos. Saigon also has changed and advanced since their last visit.
