Forest Lake Rotary Club July Update

Jamie Furness    July 23, 2022    2 min read

It may not be well known that Rotary and Probus are intrinsically linked, and each organisation plays a key role in the community we serve.

Our History With Probus

The Rotary Club of Forest Lake sponsored the Forest Lake Probus Club on February 11 2002. However, it wasn’t chartered until April 27 2002 thus this year will witness Probus’ 20th anniversary.

On October 1 2020 Probus announced its inaugural Probus Day which is a new annual celebration.  This date acknowledges the United Nations Day of Older Persons which was declared by the UN more than 30 years ago to highlight the important contributions older people make to our society.

Each Probus Club is unique in what it offers its members through its monthly meetings with interesting guest speakers and a range of activities, interest groups, trips and tours.  The 2022 Probus day theme is “Probus provides unlimited possibilities in retirement.“ There are many Probus Clubs that have maintained great relationships with their sponsoring Rotary Club. Over time our relationship with our Probus Club has diminished somewhat to the stage that our contact is primarily attendance at their Annual General Meeting and at times we have provided guest speakers.

Fresh Vision Through Joint Venture

We hope to improve our relationship and are considering a joint event to let members of the wider community know how we can work together for the betterment of our community. After all, Probus was established  nearly 50 years ago mainly to provide Rotarians with the opportunity to stay connected with fellow retirees once their life of service in Rotary had ended.

Thus it is my objective to join Probus in July 2022. As a consequence I will no longer be a Rotarian so this will be my last column.

Thank you one and all for your support over many years in writing this column.
