Local News Publications has joined forces with another one of the largest news forces based in Logan to ensure the cities retain a strong, vibrant and reliable news service.
MyCity Media, (publisher of MyCity Logan) along with Local News Publications, (publisher of Logan West News, The Lake News and The Greater Springfield Times) will combine resources to grow their capacity as a number 1 destination for news and information.
MyCity Logan publisher and managing director of MyCity Media Simon Holt said it was an exciting way forward for both businesses.
He said regular readers would continue to see a high standard of local journalism, bolstered by a more dynamic news site.
“We know there is a strong appetite for local news outside the fake information which often appears on social media,” Mr Holt said.
“Even those who haven’t grown up in the habit of looking out for their local newspaper are demanding a printed product. And more readers than ever are coming to www.mycitylogan.com.au to read about local events, people, law changes, announcements, and of course a diversity of opinion.”
Local News Publications director Paul Jackson said he started Logan West News seven years ago as a way to help connect his community, and in 2022 he purchased Local News Publications to help continue the legacy of it’s former owners.
“I was tired of big media bagging out our community and wanted to give locals their own voice and a platform to tell their own stories,” Cr Jackson said.
“I wasn’t a media guy, but I appreciated how valuable it could be to create an environment which celebrated the wonderful work being done within our communities, the successes and the issues we were all facing.
“It’s always been my passion to bring the community together, and this was a great way of being able to do that.
“Over that time, we’ve celebrated our western suburbs, watched them grow, welcomed new families, and told that story.
“I’m now delighted that we’re able to continue that journey with a group of people who share our vision.”
Mr Jackson said The Lake News would continue to play a hyperlocal role to keep people within the fast-growing western corridor connected.
Mr Holt said the merge was an exciting opportunity for readers to embrace professional journalism.
“We all live here and work here,” he said.
“We care about our own backyard.
“MyCity Logan opened at a time when this city was being let down by an international business that decided local news was no longer important.”
Rupert Murdoch closed the local paper, The Albert and Logan News, in 2020.
“Despite Covid, an emerging economic crisis, and a perceived decline in the take up of print media, we simply couldn’t leave people without public interest journalism, something we regard as an essential service,” Mr Holt said.
“Since that time, we’re proud to be the city’s ‘paper’, and now we’ll look to expand our news coverage to more people and into more homes.
“We know we’ll be welcoming more people to read our journalism, whether it be in the pages of our newspaper and magazines, on the internet, in cafes, on buses, or elsewhere.
“Such a time is exciting for any news organisation.”
Logan West News, The Greater Springfield News and The Lakes News will continue to be published monthly. The Lake News will continue to be home delivered.
